Funnily enough, all the Big petrol companies over in aussie all have their
own storage tanks, and refineries.
They do their own refining there, the petrol comes from bass straight and
off-shore australia,
The australian government did the petrol companies a deal to keep the petrol
refinerys and things, they linked into the world market.
So the petrol companies are actually making a killing, elsewhere when petrol
prices are about $40us per gallon, the companies which get the aussie fuel
are still only paying around $8 a gallon.
As to sulphur content, well if its australian petrol we are doubly screwed.
There was a scandal where they discovered most of the petrol companies were
adding 5 to 6 times the acceptable limit of sulphur to the fuel.
Its also accepted by the government here that there is sulphur added to the
fuel,
I know this for a fact.

Well, you may be interested to know that all the 91 96 in NZ comes from the
same place, and all the 98 comes from the same source in aussi, so there is
not, and cannot be, any difference. All the stations get their fuel from the
same large storage tanks, and it's just doled out based on who put what in -
it all mixes together (well, all 96 together, all 98 together, etc, etc..).
The one exception to this is G.A.S stations, which do buy on the
international spot market, so vary a lot more (also why some times they have
no 96..) - Gull used to be like this, but now they share sources with the
big
chains.
All the additives they like to proclaim are just different marketing from
each
company of the same additives, as again they all get mixed.
As for adding sulphur, any station found doing this would be in BIG trouble
with the commerce commission, and they do have people doing randon fuel
checks direct from pumps (although not enough I suspect..).
Of course, the 'makes your engine run better' additives are another story,
since they state they have them, they are free to use that to make the fuel
work a little worse, but the amounts are so tiny it will make no real
difference.
Water in the storage tanks can be a problem - it is one reason why you can
get
bad fuel while a station is filling, or RIGHT after, or as they are running
low. NEVER get fuel if you see a tanker connected up delivering fuel!
Oh, and for a given engine setup, 98 will give less power than 96, which
will
give less than 91, unless there is a detonation problem. a normal supra
seems
to have zero problem on 96, although 91 seems to give a bit of a drop -
probably as the ECU is retarding to control detonation at high boost.
Higher octane=less performance in a given working engine, as it burns
slower,
and has more energy-absorbing molecules in the mix (which is WHY it has
higher octane, and resists detonation better..)
Regards,
Stuart.
