TEMS Hard mode   2004-04-26 09:37:00 <Dave Thom>
Morning all, hope everyone had a fun weekend... I know this has been posted/mentioned before, but could someone please tell me how to lock my TEMS into hard mode? I'm wanting to see how much of a difference it makes to handling when in permanent hard as opposed to auto switching itself from soft mode like I have it...

Cheers :)

Thanks for that, however thats more of a switchable option, I'm looking to
lock the shocks in hard mode and never have them change again. Even to the
point where I might remove the actuators once they're in hard mode... any
ideas anybody?

If that's all you're trying to do then just drive the car at over 60kph,
slam on the brakes till you stop (hard mode), turn off the ignition with
your foot still on the brakes, then go around and unplug the actuators. Job
done.

...or alternatively you could just jumper TS and E1 in your diags box and
hit the 'sport' button - same effect.

Re: TEMS Hard mode   2004-04-27 12:29:00 <Dave Thom>

And if i do this, then once they're in hard mode I can remove the actuators
completely from the strut towers and there'll be no negative side effects,
I'll just have permanently hard(ish) suspension and a little less weight in
the car?

Or you could just put your foot to the floor with ignition on - car not
started and this will do the same thing.

If that's all you're trying to do then just drive the car at over 60kph,
slam on the brakes till you stop (hard mode), turn off the ignition with
your foot still on the brakes, then go around and unplug the actuators. Job
done.

Bearing in mind that your shocks are AT LEAST 12 years old and probably not
in the best condition - by making them hard 24/7 is going to wear them out a
lot more than just normal driving around and having them self adjust - hey
if you can get new TEMS for cheap then hey - go for it!!

BTW: I was told that the TEMS set up adjusts each wheel individually rather
than all four all at once - true??

Cheers

Accurate as ever Hunt. The TEMS adjustment just alters the valve sizing at
the bottom of the shock - the additional wear is negligable.

Funny, it's working fine for me.

Actually, Hunt is right here.

For a long time it's been accepted that TEMS lock on hard increases wear,
probably because it increases the dynamic pressures inside the shock, which
press the seals harder into the sleeves, and therefore ups their wear rate a
bit.
Of course, it does alloe one to squeeze a little more life out of a nearly
stuffed set, so hey, whatever.

One other note, I'm not sure I like the idea of locking the shock to hard and
removing the actuator, because the actuation is rotary, and inside the shaft
there are hone marks that are also rotaty - it is not impossible in my mind
that a shock could work it's way to another setting over time without
something there atr the top to 'hold' it.
of course, some suitable trimmed metal or wood or whatever at the top to hold
the small actuating tang in the right position would seeon take care of that.
Then again, it is maybe not a problem, hard to tell.
I just know I wouldn't want to be driving a car where one corner had slipped
down to soft, with the rest hard!

Regards,
Stuart.

Matter of interpretation that. According to Hunt:
"by making them hard 24/7 is going to wear them out a
lot more than just normal driving around and having them self adjust -"

I don't contest that the wear increases, but the difference between normal
use and hard-lock is hardly significant, particularly as TEMS shocks switch
onto hard when you brake/corner fast in any case :)

On that note - I've noticed that different cars have different sensitivity
with their TEMS G sensors. My car hardly takes a twitch before the shocks
switch to hard more, whereas others I've driven have taken a real bashing to
make them move...

Yep, probably right, I doubt the wear increase is more than 50% faster, but
it's probably not tiny either, as the pressures behind the seals would be a
lot higher, and the seals are what fails. (why on earth they use the crappy
designed-to-wear-out phenolic seals they use I don't know!)

Also very true.

G sensor? Mk.3's don't have a G sensor....
They have a steering angle sensor, and detect brakes and throttle position.
Which is why it's important to always start your car with the steering
pointing straight ahead ;)

or Gas ;)

Steering angle sensor?
R U sure this is where it is? So your saying it runs off the angle of the
steering wheel (to an extent)? And if you start your car with the steering
wheel on an angle your shocks will harden??
Also getting back to my original question - do they adjust individually or
all four at once?

Yep, probably right, I doubt the wear increase is more than 50% faster, but
it's probably not tiny either, as the pressures behind the seals would be a
lot higher, and the seals are what fails. (why on earth they use the crappy
designed-to-wear-out phenolic seals they use I don't know!)

Also very true.

G sensor? Mk.3's don't have a G sensor....
They have a steering angle sensor, and detect brakes and throttle position.
Which is why it's important to always start your car with the steering
pointing straight ahead ;)

Funny, it's working fine for me.

As far as my thoughts go, it's tended more towards "oh great, Hunt's talking
bollocks again".

What I mean is that if you start the car with the steering to the side, then
it will think that direction is 'straight' for the purposes of TEMS
adjustment.

No one would be insane enough to adjust shocks individually, it would be
suicide.

Hmm, I was sure they did - thought it was built into the TEMS computer.
How else does it manage to kick the suspension to hard when you're going
around a fast sweeping corner (ie with no change in steering angle)?

Well, I've just tried it again from home (work previously), and I assure
you it's working fine.

Sorry, I meant to say "constantly" :-P

Appears to be using port 81? And it seems that this port is blocked by my
nazi work

Constantly?? Nah you'd know it if I was :)

It has to use 81 (or rather something different from 80) - I have no
choice in that matter.

I know they're 14 years old, and have 120,000kms on them (ie. past their
useful life) but they're being replaced by full height/damper adjustable
coilovers in the next 3-4 months so I'm not overly worried about how long
they last, I'd just like to see if it makes an improvement to handling
seeing as I drive a nice winding road to and from work every day so I get to
test the car twice a day (and myself) :)
