GZ20 Manual conversion   2004-04-29 09:52:00 <Dave Thom>
Hey all, just wondering if anyone has a manual 1G-GTE ECU for sale? I don't think I need to change them when I do the conversion, but just in case I do it'd be nice to know where I can grab one from... Also can anyone tell me how much oil the w58 will hold? Cheers

Dave, I have my MKII 1G-GTE hooked up to a W55 gearbox and the motor and ecu I have was originally from an automatic GA70, It has never caused any problems. I didn't however fit the separate ECT that it came with, and as yours will certainly be installed at present, you should only need to short out the neutral start switch to fix any starting problems.

Cheers

Hey.
Don't have one for sale but you don't actually need it. The only thing you need
to change is bypassing the neutral start switch which a piece of cake to do.

W58 should hold 2.5qts
Along with the neutral start, you will have to make up a plug for the reverse lights (and you will even get the automatic reverse beeping!!)

kewl huh?

Hrrmm.. 2.5qts... So thats a little over 2.5litres?

Also whats the ideal oil to run in these? I think I read a while back about
a 50/50 atf and manual gear oil mix for the best results? So 50% ATF Dexron
III and 50% 80-90w gear oil would be a good result?

The mix thing will give you lower losses in the GB, and arguably longer life,
but at the cost of a noticaly notchier change and more noise/vibration.

Not sure on the quantities sorry, I always thought it was a case of 'fill to
the side drain level'.

Stuart.

I'd understood the mix was to reduce the notchiness... What would give less
notchiness and less noise/vibration? Is the losses in the gearbox noticeable
through the oil differences or neglible enough to not matter?

I've got 2l of Dexron III ATF and about 2 litres of 80w-90 manual gear oil
left over from when I did my cosmo diff a couple of years ago so I can
pretty much mix and match any combination...

Nope, the mix makes the oil thinner, therefore more vibration and harder to
get between gears, but less losses in the box (and therefore lower temps
also).
Grease would reduce vibration and notchiness, but the gearbox would be, shall
we say, a little lossy ;)

Yep, those should be safe, I've used Dexron III and standard 80/90 gear oil in
my manual supra and 2 bike gearboxes with no problems.

Dexron III ATF is generally MASSIVLY more highly speced than manual type gear
oils (open up an auto one day and you will see why), therefore it is quite
probably better for the gears, having a much higher film strength, and better
cleaning properties, the cost is noise, vibration, and a notchy change,
although the W boxes are usualy real smooth anyway, it's the R154 that can be
a bit touchy.

Stuart.

Dave
Changed the oil in mine recently, took 2.4 litres. I used Castrol Multitrax 75W-90 which Castrol recomend "for manual transmissions operating under high load and/or high speeds"
However, they did say that that the fully synthetic Syntrax 75W-90 was better, but it is only available in 4 litre packs, and at a price I was not prpared to pay!
The Multitrax is OK though, no vibration or notchiness through the gear lever, although you do have to push a little harder on the lever for the first few Ks from dead cold.
Cheers,
Pat D
