BHG fixed..   2004-05-13 16:05:00 <Brett>
Hello all,

some of you may be aware that i have recently replaced my head gasket and other top end gaskets on my 7M. finished it late last night, fired her up this morning to find it had a bad miss. very noticible at idle and noticible when driving. it is inconsistent which makes me think its not any valve component problems. seems to have a noticible noise coming from the exhaust when it does miss (almost like the start of a backfire). cam sprockets match TDC on crank so i dont believe it is to do with that.

I have checked the vacuum hoses and intake manifolds, both of which seem fine. when i was dismantling the head i removed the cam position sensor and didnt make note of its position, could this be a problem??

any ideas/thoughts would be much appreciated..

I also have my members page listed at www.supras.org.nz/members for those of you who are interested.

Cheers

OK, cams: Are you sure you got the dowel in the correct hole? It's possible
to get the pin one hole out and have one cam pointing the wrong way. Centre
hole should match centre hole. If you undo the bolt on the cam pulley you
ought to be able to see enough to work out if they're correct.

Cam belt alignment: I take it you've checked that the match marks on the cam
pulleys match the slots in the top of the back plate?

CPS - if you haven't realigned this properly and checked your timing then
that's quite likely your problem. You *need* to check the timing accurately
otherwise it'll never run right. You know where to find me if you need to
borrow a timing light.

100% positive the pins on the sprockets are fine,

Cambelt is perfectly matched with the sprockets lining up with the mark on the plate behind it and the crank at 0 degrees

i have a timing light so ill give that a go and pray that that it be the problem!!

Have you checked to ensure that your 0° mark is *actually* 0°? Stick a long
screw driver down No.1 cylinder and rotate the engine till it's at full
elevation - check against crank mark.

Don't forget to jumper TE1 and E1 while you're doing it.

Could be an HT lead if they're getting older, they sometimes fray when they're taken out.

Just an idea.

might wanna check you have TDC on the compression stroke and not the exhaust
stroke too

take the cam covers off and the lobes on the cams should be pointing out
(away from the centre) @ TDC on #1 ;)

i dont know what the dizzy's are like on the 7M's but do they have a gear
that drives them of does it go onto the end of the cam shaft?

Cheers
Adrian

This wouldn't make the problem inconsistent tho would it?

You don't need to go that far - just set the engine to TDC and take a
look through the oil filler cap. If you can see the lobe of the cam
pointing at you then you're on true TDC.

The exhaust cam has a bevel gear just behind the cam pulley and the CPS
meshes direct to that.
