oops   2004-05-24 14:51:00 <Hunt M>
Hey all,

Was a little pissed off with a female friend of mine so when I dropped her
off I also dropped the clutch - doing a - as "oldies" call it - WHEELIE -
since then when-ever I accelerate enough for the turbo to spool up it sounds
like it is sucking through a straw - sounds really restrictive. Have checked
intake and intercooler piping but found no blockages and air filter still
looks alright, ie. Not collapsed in on itself.

Turbo still spins freely and has no play in it, ie. Same as before.

Boost gauge appears to show vacuum leak as it now shows 0.55bar as opposed
to 0.6-0.65

Idling is also rough. Often will idle at 1,500rpm and take about 10-15
seconds to idle down to a lower than normal 600rpm missing and running rough
at this stage.

The other interesting thing is my BOV now also sounds different - where-as
before it was the typical boy racer pssshhhh sound - now has more like a
squeak sound to it.

Any ideas on this?

Cheers

Hunt

You have probably blown off a small hose somewhere, check around very
farefully.

when you did the "wheelie" how did you do it? did you just hold your foot into it in first, or slap to second? did you rev up, back off, rev up, back off in first or second? just wondering if maybe as you were off the accelerator, maybe something happened to the BOV. might have been tired, and for some odd reason decided now to let go during sudden off/on operation.

do you have another one to try it with?

Have checked all lines and sprayed CRC on all joins everywhere - engine did
no idle up.
I'm thinking a cracked I/C but have also been suggested a BHG. There is no
water in the oil and the water is still a very yummy green - although I
should flush it soonish.

I just held it in first - feathering the throttle so to speak.

If the bov was leaking when I sprayed CRC on it the revs would have idled up
as it sucked it in yes?? Which it did not do.

I do not have another one to try although like I said I don't think it is
the BOV.

It's not a cheap BOV but not a ritzy one either - Monza "sequential" type.

Cheers

when you spray crc on it, doesn't that only show that it's a crack in the pipe? what if it was the actual bov itself? perhaps the internal spring?

Yes perhaps it could be the internal spring not holding the BOV shut and in
which case it would be sucking air in through it and when CRC is sprayed on
it or in it the car would rev up a bit at idle...????

I have not removed it yet - its welded and resin'd in so is going to be hard
to take out lol
Reason for this is I cracked the flange when I put it in.

it would more than likely leak under boost and will blow rather than suck
crc wont work.you need positive pressure to test if it leaks.=0D

Yes perhaps it could be the internal spring not holding the BOV shut and =

which case it would be sucking air in through it and when CRC is sprayed =
on
it or in it the car would rev up a bit at idle=85=85.????=0D

when you spray crc on it, doesn't that only show that it's a crack in the

Hey all,=0D
Was a little pissed off with a female friend of mine so when I dropped he=

IE -
since then when-ever I accelerate enough for the turbo to spool up it sou=

like it is sucking through a straw - sounds really restrictive. Have chec=

intake and intercooler piping but found no blockages and air filter still
looks alright, ie. Not collapsed in on itself.=0D
Turbo still spins freely and has no play in it, ie. Same as before.=0D
Boost gauge appears to show vacuum leak as it now shows 0.55bar as oppose=
d
to 0.6-0.65=0D
Idling is also rough. Often will idle at 1,500rpm and take about 10-15
seconds to idle down to a lower than normal 600rpm missing and running ro=

at this stage.=0D
The other interesting thing is my BOV now also sounds different =96 where=

before it was the typical boy racer pssshhhh sound =96 now has more like =

CRC does and would work if there was a leak in the intercooler piping,
joining or if the BOV was leaking when at idle

it would more than likely leak under boost and will blow rather than
suck.crc wont work.you need positive pressure to test if it leaks.

Yes perhaps it could be the internal spring not holding the BOV shut and in
which case it would be sucking air in through it and when CRC is sprayed on
it or in it the car would rev up a bit at idle...????

when you spray crc on it, doesn't that only show that it's a crack in the
pipe? what if it was the actual bov itself? perhaps the internal spring?

I just held it in first - feathering the throttle so to speak.

If the bov was leaking when I sprayed CRC on it the revs would have idled up
as it sucked it in yes?? Which it did not do.

I do not have another one to try although like I said I don't think it is
the BOV.

It's not a cheap BOV but not a ritzy one either - Monza "sequential" type.

when you did the "wheelie" how did you do it? did you just hold your foot
into it in first, or slap to second? did you rev up, back off, rev up, back
off in first or second? just wondering if maybe as you were off the
accelerator, maybe something happened to the BOV. might have been tired,
and for some odd reason decided now to let go during sudden off/on
operation.

do you have another one to try it with?

Cheers

Hunt

Not really - it only really works for vacuum leaks - ie: after the throttle
body. It may work a little for leaks before that, but only a very very
little, because there is no suction to pull the CRC in to the air system, and
the ratio would be too low to show a big difference.

RE: oops   2004-05-24 19:39:00 <Hunt M>
There will be a small amount of vacuum in the intake between the turbo and
the throttle body as the turbo and air filter will be causing restrictions
enough to create a vacuum. However there does not appear to be any leaks at
these points - strange thing is about the boost gauge showing vacuum less
than before but no hoses are broken - no injectors leaking or sucking in air
and I cant see any other random parts missing....

Cheers
Hunt

Not really - it only really works for vacuum leaks - ie: after the throttle
body. It may work a little for leaks before that, but only a very very
little, because there is no suction to pull the CRC in to the air system,
and
the ratio would be too low to show a big difference.

Trust me, there will be SO little vacuum there that it would be next to
undetectable. Of course, it you removed the air filter and put a 'cover' on
it to block out nearly all of the area, thus creating a significant
restriction, it would work, but then the AFM is not going to read correctly
(but probably correctly enough to allow a stable idle).

For the CRC trick to work you need a significant proportion of the air the
engine is consuming to get mixed with it, which is just not going to happen
on the pre-throttle body part of the system, unless you sprayed a LOT in
directly through the intake.

It does work a treat post-throttle body though.
