power steering.   2004-06-09 13:04:00 <ronniekumar>
I have been driving my brother's gtst skyline for a couple of days now.My supra has more grunt, but I noticed with the skyline steering,I could feel the road a lot more.Power steering on the skyline is less, which is what I prefer .Don't the later models ma70 come out with progressive power steering.Power steering decreases as speed of car increases.Some-one tell me if I'm wrong. If that is the case,my question is:Did the 1988 supra have progressive power steering ?.If no,What do I have to do to swap the power steering of the later ma70s into my supra. It it just the steering rack, pump that needs to be swapped over.
Thanks,
Ronnie.

i thought most cars with power steering and all supras had this progressive steering. if yours doesnt stiffen up at high speeds, chances are there is a problem with one of the parts, not sure about all the details.

also ronnie, i have lost ya number, could you email it to me sometime, im after a few parts u may be able to help me with.

cheers

Also there are two vacuum lines that need to go to the power steering unit -
one before the throttle body and one after - I believe - correct me if I'm
wrong.

Thanks,Just a change of subject,I have a 1984 1.5L autocorolla and will be
getting a 1.3L manual corolla for nothing. The auto corolla has bad
engine, the manual one has bad body.I want to put the 1.3L engine with gear
box into the auto corlla body.Engines are 3a.How hard will it be to do the
swap,and how long.This is my every-day car.

Hunt,

I believe you are wrong.

The vacuum lines to the power steering pump are an
'idle up' mechanism, not 'progressive power steering'.

at idle, when you turn the wheel, the powersteering will draw from the
engine for the power to turn the wheels. when that happens, the idle drops
(same as when the a/c turns on) so it raises the idle to adjust for that.
not sure how it does that, but yeah

I saw an article years ago on how progressive power steering was introduced
on the 1989 + supras.
Just wondering how true it is.

I believe it was introduced about the same time as the 'facelift', but not
exactly (there was some overlap).
It is speed sensitive.

The JZA70 seems to have a slightly improved system also.

It should not be a very difficult matter to open up a pump and reduce the
regulated pressure for your assist to give a bit less assist, it is just low
speed turning would become harder..

Regards,
Stuart.

I had a good look when i last took the engine out.

There is some sort of a pressure valve that is on the outlet of the PS line
from the pump and has a vacuum line in it also.

When there is a pressure drop (ie: PS being used) it opens up the vacuum
line allowing more air ro the intake with the result of bumping the idle up
a tad ;)
