LOL! nah I'm not thinking of bolting a CT26 to a 1JZ,

I'm thinking of switching the steel bits in a ct26 with the ceramic bits in my
CT20b and then using the CT26 on a semi-custom application at > 1 bar boost,

I cant really justify a 1JZ unless I can get an ECU + Loom + manual transmission
with it,
but even when I do get the 1jz i'll still be doing things with the ct26

Out of curiosity, why exactly? And on the same note, how would it perform on
a 1G? Or a CT20b on a 1G?

It's a matter of horses for courses. The CT26 is just a dodgy copy of a
T04B, but with less finesse. The rotating parts in a CT26 weight nearly
half a kilogram (yes I have weighed them accurately before anyone asks),
and the rest of the assembly is designed more with cost of manufacture
in mind rather than performance. They bolt them to diesel Landcruisers
after all...

The CT26 on the 7M was never really there to add a whole lot of power to
the equation, but more to create a point of difference for the different
models. Witness that the non-turbo/turbo performance difference amounts
to 33HP/52lb-ft, with very little if any change in whereabouts the power
is being delivered in the rev range. Power increase is around 16%
through the turbo.

The 1JZ on the other hand is a transformation. Power goes up
80HP/52lb-ft, or around 51% increase over the non-turbo. Importantly
the torque peak also occurs higher up the rev range (by about 1000
revs), which is an indication of a significant performance boost (higher
torque peak is very desireable to make best use of gearing to produce
the highest possible acceleration).

Net effect is the CT26 is a lazy turbo for (relatively) lazy engine.
Strapping one of these to a 1JZ isn't going to light the world on fire.
About the only gain you could expect would be from an improved exhaust
manifold set-up, assuming that you made one from scratch to suit.

OTOH, a CT26 on a 1G seems to work relatively well, so long as you don't
mind lag. The 50% smaller engine puts the air flow capabilities of the
CT26 more into the 'performance' end of the 1Gs spectrum. But really,
the lag is heinous.

190-200rwkw?
I remember someone made some homemade manifold set up and got like
150-160rwkw at like 14psi or something, but that was with a not so pretty
manifold - pile of poo could be the best words to describe it?

Yes.

Symptom of bad flow in manifolds/exhausts is the inability to hold boost
at higher revs. I have the same problem - can't maintain over 14psi on

And it's the manifold that causing the restriction and not allowing you to
hold higher boost or the turbo or both?

It's a manifold designed for a T04, but I'm running a sandwich-plated T3
on it. With the heavier T04 wheel it behaves fine, but it hasn't done
the business with the GT30 strapped to it. My solution is to build a
better one.

Well, kind of.
The CT26 does have the one massive advantage over the T04 of having
water cooled bearings.
Other than that the T04 just shows it's years of development after the
ct26 froze IMHO.

Umm, much much more low end torque on the turbo model, and remember
the car was intended to release at 300HP, it was US insurance
companies that forced it down to 240. The NA was never going to do
that.

Just out of interest, have you used/fitted the manifold yet? I've got one
the same or similar (HKS T04-flange cast manifold with ext. wastegate for
1G) and I'm just wondering where the turbo will sit in relation to the
standard twins etc. I had been told to try and get a T04B, but if anyone
has better suggestions for a turbo I'm all ears.

Erm, hardly massive. The only situation in which water cooling helps is
where very hot shutdowns occur, and that's essentially only when non
tubo-savvy owners are involved. Water cooling is a method for the car
companies to ensure the vehicles make it through the warranty period in
one piece. Any given turbo will survive just as long with or without
water cooling, so long as it's treated right.

It's been on my car for longer than the 7+ years I've owned it. The T04
sits in pretty much the same place as the stock CT26, but I can't vouch
for the 1G set up.

"Get a T04B" is like saying "buy a red car, they're faster". There's
hundreds of different T04B combinations out there, and no two are quite
the same. Having said that, a 'B' frame is a much better idea on a two
litre than an 'E' frame. Pretty much any 'E' will be too big for your
requirements.

True, 'massive' in that if you look at turbos from back in that era
(the garret on the RX7 turbo springs to mind, as well as similarly
aged turbo subarus) the ct26 shows as highly reliable WRT it's output.
For a daily driver IMHO water cooling is a large advantage, as it
significantly lowers coking in the bearings, which happens no matter
how careful cool downs are (of course lack of cool down causes surface
coking, much much worse and fatal, as you well know :) I suspect that
water cooling makes a major difference to the reliability of a
'joe-user' owned turbo car that is not pampered.

Water cooling will also significantly lower the bearings operational
temperature, being as how water has around 4 times the thermal
capacity of oil, and a much better flow rate.

Of course, in a race application it is of no importance at all, so
long a suitable budget is there.

It was actually a generic question - deeper into it would have been - a
larger exhaust wheel would mean that a larger compressor wheel could be
fabricated without worrying about reaching the limits of the exhaust wheel?

Compressor wheels of the CT26 and K26 are nearly identical....same inner and
outer diameter and pretty much the same blade design - the compressor
housing however on the K26 is more restrictive so I'm told yet the hot side
is about to support up to around 450hp yet the cold side will fall way
short of that due inlet design of the compressor housing and the size of the
compressor wheel itself - so I'm told....

Being that its a near standard 2000cc motor i'm guessing that I would want
smallish A/R's, and I believe an on-centre exhaust housing would be easier
to connect the exhaust to, can you (or anyone else) suggest some suitable
compressor trims and A/R's etc? It looks as though I can get a new one on
the net for around US$600-800, and would have basically an open choice of
sizes, wheel trims etc.

You mean the Hitachi HT18? Nothing to do with Garrett. The HT18
suffered from turbine end leakage problems and turbine housing cracking,
but that was an issue of application rather than anything else. Put the
same turbo onto a Skyline (as the HT18 is roughly the same as a T3 rear
end) and the problems go away...

Having just talked to the turbo service guys here, the difference as a
rule of thumb between water cooled and non is in the region of a few
percent difference, and the additional carbon generally is not enough to
make any real difference. Carbon build up seems to be much more related
to particular application and engine service.

Unlikely. I think you'll find that the operating temperature of the
bearings is very near to the engine sump temperature. The water jacket
around a core is quite a decent distance from the bearings, and
separated by the oiling chamber. The only time the water jacket is near
the bearings is opposite the oil feed through about 6mm of cast iron (in
the case of the CT26). Even then the surface area is only about the
size of a 5c piece, if that.

Way too much random information there to actually make any useful
comments.

Bear this in mind: What looks 'identical' to the eye may well not be,
and at 100,000+RPM very small differences make very big differences.
Unless you have the compressor maps available to you, then it's time to
get out the temperature probes and start making educated guesses at
what's going on.

Um, ok. You realise on-centre housings went out with the Ark? The only
one we've got around here we use as a doorstop (really).

ok, so why when I go to places down here,

and inquire about getting my CT20b "hi-flowed" or hybridised,

they always quote for a CT26, once they have looked at the turbo, even though I
specifically tell them its not a CT26 (and by the way their is definately no
CT26 on the compressor cover, in fact the only thing on the compressor cover is
"TOYOTA" thats it.)

is it just that the guys I gone and seen in wellington are morons and shouldnt
be let anywhere near my car regardless, or do the CT20B and CT26 look the
same??

Outwardly they look quite similar, and the 20B is quite rare compared to
the 26. Fairly natural that they would make a mistake.

Hmmm, back in my time I helped change garret turbos on 3 turbo rx7's
(the old turbo rx7s, not the newer ones), which seems very strange...

The water jacket is mainly between the exhaust housing and the bearing
housing, to stop heat flow through this area, which is the main cause
of core heating, would you not say? (the other source being conduction
down the actual shaft), so the water jacket lowers significantly the
heat geting to the oil+bearings, rather than directly cooling the
bearings, which will produce little heat of their own.

Must be a funny ruler you were using. The 20B and 26 shafts are
identical diameters (6.5mm and 10mm).

They weren't original then. T3/T4 hybrid replacements are quite common
on RX7s, as was replacing just the compressor end and using a T4
compressor cover.

The water jacket is on the top of the bearing housing, the exhaust
manifold beside and below. There's some overlap, but not much, as the

different torque curve etc... but my car made 157rwkw with standard turbos
at a dyno read 13psi... so I don't see why you would go to a CT26? Also
there is no way in hell my car chirps the rears going into 3rd... hell it
doesn't even do it going into 2nd...

Is there something I"m missing here?

with 2 mufflers, 3" pipe replacing cat, no filter, standard factory 1g front
mount, and bleed/needle valve setup as documented on supras site... wtf is a

Soap box is what some ppl - not mentioning names here- SUZE!!! - called my
top mount water to air intercooler that came with my engine (out of a
Cresta) that acted more like an inter-heater! - Still managed to get me
159rwkw on around 12psi - maybe just under - however I did have a 2.5 inch
exhaust and pod filter...

This was three years ago, and only relates to TP's dyno. There was a
sudden jump up in everyone's power output not long after we ran the
SCONZ dyno day there. If you look at the performance car dyno day
figures around that time they all suddenly get a lot better...

So thay must of all gone out and got boost contolers.

my car as been on 3 diffrent dynos in a short time and thay have read the same power only the torque figer was diffrent.

Seems to have lasted. ie It was previously reading low, rather than it

I believe people are arguing two different points here...

Cully is stating that the TP dyno appeared to suddenly started reading higher at a point 3 years ago, I dont' know how significant the jump was, but I do know by the nature of dyno's they're not exactly a fantastic judge of "power" on the road.

John is arguing that he's been on 3 different dyno's, all read the same, so therefore if the TP dyno was reading high, so must the other two dyno's be reading high due to giving the same figures...

You just contradicted your self then - you said that he got
158odd rwkw and it was a genuinely quick car and then you proceeded to
claim that the TP's dyno was reading higher than it should have been -
suggesting that his dyno read was out - perhaps you should either
clarify or make your mind up.

You never stated that when you made you claim to fame
about the dyno being out - you said that it was inaccurate when the test
took place but you never said if it was when Dave's was on it or if it
was Robbi's
