Indeed... You're right though Hanre, the thrust bearing does go around the
input shaft to push on the clutch fingers... However, when you depress the
clutch, the force you're exerting on the clutch is being translated through
the flywheel to the crank. These thrust washers prevent excessive crank
end-float (the sides of the crank journals would wear on the block).

This is also why you shouldn't start your car in gear with your foot on the
clutch from cold, as you're applying pressure to your thrust washers when
there isn't any oil about.... ;)

Btw, the spigot (:p) bearing is the bearing that accepts the end of the
input shaft (it's recessed into the centre of the flywheel). Not all
engines have these....

Indeed... You're right though Hanre, the thrust bearing does go
around the input shaft to push on the clutch fingers... However, when
you depress the clutch, the force you're exerting on the clutch is being
translated through the flywheel to the crank. These thrust washers
prevent excessive crank end-float (the sides of the crank journals would
wear on the block).

This is also why you shouldn't start your car in gear with your
foot on the clutch from cold, as you're applying pressure to your thrust
washers when there isn't any oil about.... ;)

Btw, the spigot (:p) bearing is the bearing that accepts the end
of the input shaft (it's recessed into the centre of the flywheel). Not
all engines have these....

Hunt,

Send an email to: warwick.parts@bowater.toyota.co.nz

He does good deals for Toyspeed etc...

Make sure you include your full chassis code (eg JZA80-ALFQZ) and give him
the engine code too.

Ben.
