why we speed :)   2001-08-30 12:14:00 <Stuart Woolford>

Well, as part of the defensive driving course I'm currently doing
(primarily do I can ride my bike with a power/weight ratio or 0.65 hp/kg
versus the 0.15 of my supra, sounds defensive to me, or possibly stategic
;) I need to collect the answer to the following question, which I thought
this particular ground of carefull road users would be most qualified to
answer ;)

so here it is.

"What compels you to speed"

all answers, along with drivers license numbers, number plates, and
favorite road-racing locations/times will be presented to a class of 15
year olds who's idea of a fast car is a hot FXGT or their mums vitara.

Regards,
Stuart.
(who does not drive fast, ever, no matter what man, 'cause that would be
bad, right? ;)

I can answer that for all of us....What compels me to speed? Well it starts with S, and ends in upra....
With so much power under the bonnet it's an insult to the car not to wind it up
:-)

Ministry of Transport / Police definitions of speed.

speeding = road accidents
accidents are caused by speed.

However what is actually correct: Speed is forward motion. This is not
braking the law.

Remember 5th For physics S = D/T

I am always astounded when these statements are rhetorically used by the
above mentions GOVT departments. But what they neglect to tell you is ....In
most cases the speed limit was never actually broken in 'speed' related
accidents.

Last years labour road toll was reported as been accredited to speed. (That
is logical as no forward motion wild result in zero collusions). The
reporter went on to ask if any of the accidents were accredited to braking
the speed limit. The answer was NO!

My theory is if your are traveling fast , your are concentration like hell
to avoided an accident. If you travel at 100Km or less your mind goes into
autopilot and you will run off the road or hit someone .I tried it once....
driving at the speed limit. Nearly drove of the road on a lazy corner. Loss
of concentration.

What compels me to speed?

Getting out of the path of the other inadequate fuckwits on the road.
Admittedly, this also causes me to drive much slower than the limit on
occasion... depends on what the aforementioned fuckwit is doing...

Of course, sometimes it's just the drugs (read caffeine) kicking in and
overwhelming my will to be a good LTSA compliant citizen.

Cheers,
Nick.

The only reason you're doing a defensive driving course is because
you've completely mastered and grown weary of Offensive Driving...

>"What compels you to speed"

My serious answer:
"Excess speed holds no attraction for me - it is merely the passing by
of the landscape in a shorter period of time. The attainment of excess
speed however is a different matter entirely. The sensation created
when a mere human achieves complete mastery over a machine with enough
power to completely obliterate the mere human from all existence, and
reduce that enormous power to fast, precise and calculable responses,
outweighs by far any other sensation of enjoyment or satisfaction that
can be found while behind the wheel."

I hope that worries them sufficiently...

a) Safety - spend at least time possible near the lunatics (i.e. the humans)
b) Safety - getting rear ended because of driving at the speed limit is a
definite hazard.
c) Economy - Better fuel economy at 110 vs 100 in my jag.
d) And well I've got a car capable of doing 260km/hr, it would be a crying
shame to
let that go to completely to waste.
e) The voices in my head tell me to.

RE: why we speed :)   2001-08-30 16:51:00 <J Walker>
My serious answer would be..I don't set out to speed. If I could, I'd never break the limit. It's not the speed I love..but the ACCELERATION. I like to feel Mr G Force pushing my head back in my seat. And I don't want it to stop..which ends in speeding. Driving a friend of mine's MKIV (1993, 3.0tt) I could NOT take my foot off the throttle, the sensation was to die for. Felt like the car was going to go nose up...Love it

And another one...

f) you live longer and stay younger (compared to everyone else).
According to Albert Einstein's relativity theory, the nearer you get to
the speed of light, the slower you age compared to everyone else. It
has not worked for me, yet :)
