3tgte engine swap question   2008-09-30 21:19:00 <Jamie Nock>
Hi,
After months of trying to get a replacement chain tensioner for my 2tgeu with no success, I thought I would try a 3tgte conversion into my 1981 TA61 Celica.

I already have a 1uz XX conversion that is leaching my money so I want to do this as cheaply as possible as an everyday driver.

Now, would this be a straight bolt in if I have the whole engine/loom/afm etc? Would it just be a case of droping it in and pluging it in without any custom work or replacing anything that doesnt come with the engine, eg maybe the fuel pump is bigger on the 3t. The gearbox is a t50 from factory, but i have a spare w57 that I may use, which one is best? Would the t50 handle it?

Yeah the t50 will handle it fine but the w57 would be an even better box for it. If the ta63 has 3teu engine in it now then it will be a very straight forward swap.

Cheers

Awesome.
It currently has a 2tgeu. Talking to Brenda today, she meantioned that the
cross member may be different due to the 3t sitting lower. Is someone able
to confirm?

Another issue is that i have to ship it from Welly ><. Advice on decent
companys with good prices would be appreciated!

Thanks

re: 3tgte engine swap question   2008-10-04 08:47:00 <mark>
can you confirm you have a TA63 with 2tgeu from factory?! 2tgeu celicas i thought were ta61's and 3teu and 3tgte were the ta63 so im curious to know :)
You will be able to use the 2tgeu mounts to bolt in a 3tgte because the engine block is the same. but if the 2tgeu mount on the exhaust side has a rib or gusset through the middle of it then the turbo oil drain pipe may contact it. also the 3tgte mount has one or two bolt holes (depending which version you get) to mount the support bracket for the turbo to. see pic.. http://www.toycrazy.net/index1.html if you use the 2tgeu brackets you would want to drill these holes to bolt the support bracket up to since 3tgt exhaust manifolds are known to crack.
with any luck you'll find the ta6# 2tg engine mount is the same dimensions as the 3tgte ones but maybe with thinner rubber so you should be able to use the 3tgte engine brackets but with the 2tgeu rubbers and it'll bolt in fine.

on a std 3tgte, the t50 should be fine. you'll need to use the 2tgeu flywheel if you plan to keep the 2tgeu clutch.. otherwise you'll need a hybrid clutch plate that has the 9" clutch surface of the 3tgte (2tg is 8"), but with a t50 input shaft spline. a heavy duty pressure plate with the 2t sized clutch would be highly advisable so it doesnt slip. ive known a few conversions running this setup. but fatter rear tyres and turbo upgrade may become a problem for the t50.
