2.0 GT Turbo proplems   2002-01-30 14:00:00 <Tiger Tim>
Hi all, this was posted today on the UK Supra list, and I wondered if any of you could answer, I`ll pass on any replies. Thanks.

can anyone help me?
i own a 1990 2.0 gt tt (import)supra
im having problems with loss of power, the turbos and the wastegates are
fine, they are producing plenty of boost.
the problem seems to be when accelerating, sometimes when the turbos kick in
the power drops as if something was reducing the air flow to the
cylinders, sometimes juddering occurs too as if the throttle was been open and
closed slightly causing a juddering effect,
i also have a dump valve on and it seems to be working fine and it seems to
dump plenty of air between gear changes.
could it be a fuel problem?
do these models have a fuel filter,i can`t find one in the engine bay,
there was once or twice when i was accelerating once that the car suddenly
started to accelerate a lot quicker as if there could have been a bad
connection on a wire somewhere.....
can anyone help, has anyone experienced this problem with their supra?

Cheers

Tiger Tim

Does this 1G-GTE have an AFM? If so, and if the "dump valve" is dumping to
atmosphere then that could be the problem.

Tony

Could well be. My 2.0GT/TT has a Gp "A" twin piston atmo valve, and a flap
AFM, yet shows no ill effects (including mixture surges on dumping). A
Ford-driving friend with an AFM and atmo valve has trouble even getting his
car to idle correctly!

I'd guess the description of the dump valve in Tim's mail indicates an atmo
valve, as a recirculating unit would be near-silent?

Recirculating systems are not nescessarily silent, my stock JZA70 makes
some pretty loud noises from the large stock BOV, after venting back
through the air filter, etc.

I fitted my TT with solenoid valves bypassing the wastegates until a preset
level, and modified fuel cut and overboost thresholds.
Suspect the fuel system may have been modded by the original Japanese owner.
Possibly hybrid turbos too, though they're still ceramic.
UK turbo specialists reckon they're running pretty well at the limit for
reliable CT12s

Sorry I can't give more info than this, at least until I pull them to bits
to compare with standard...

The 1GGTE engines, like the 1JZ and 2JZ, will run 17PSI on the stock fueling
computer without fuel cut (remember, they run 12PSI stock), the 7M, with it's
7PSI stock, fuel cuts at (around) 12PSI.

Regards,
Stuart.

Ah... that explains why my FCD only had to be dialed in at such a low
setting!! :-)
Thanx Stuart.
